How to Use the Records

Lessees' names have been added in square brackets in Item Description 2 to supplement the short term lease numbers and further information provided on file covers. Leases could be transferred and lessees' names are therefore not exclusive. Some files also include references to a related Darwin Town Area Lease (DTAL) number (files held in NTRS 3344). Under the Darwin Town Area Leases Ordinance 1947, leases were granted for periods up to 99 years.

Function / Content

This series consists of short term lease files held in the Darwin area following the granting of short term leases of up to 5 years duration through the 1946 Darwin Short Term Lease Ordinance. Files include copies of leases, correspondence, and information regarding termination, cancellation, or selling of leases. Items in Units 4 and 5 refer to the Nightcliff short-term lease 'hutments'. Before World War II, the Nightcliff area had been well beyond the fringe of sub-urban development and only received its official name in 1948. In 1941 the area became a naval outpost and accommodation for military personnel and a hospital building were built. As a consequence of the wartime destruction of around fifty percent of Darwin's buildings, many people were left homeless and became squatters. By 1946 over 100 civilians had moved into the vacated Nightcliff area buildings, and in July of that year the Administration began to allocate tenancies. A Nightcliff camp of squatters continued to exist into the 1950s. In response, the Northern Territory Administration issued short-term leases to occupants, which were renewed several times.
